COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY
WHO THEY ARE
Based in Blenheim, at the tip of New Zealand’s South Island, Yealands Estate is the first winery in New Zealand to aim to be carbon zero from its inception.
The aim of our work with Yealands was to develop a community engagement strategy, a focus on “sharing what nature teaches us”, supporting and disseminating the sustainable practices of the Yealands estate, and encouraging conversation and sustainable action on every scale — domestic or commercial.
WHAT WE DID
With the overall strategy established, we had to decide which area, if brought to life, would be most impactful. We decided to focus on the initial stages (Resources and Toolkits) creating the catalyst to get the strategy rolling. The design outcome was a ‘Field Guide to Beautiful Biodiversity’, which is located within stage one of the strategy – Resources for learning.
A Field Guide to Beautiful Biodiversity

This project began with developing a structured community engagement strategy; the building blocks of which were formed during a design sprint at Yealands. The strategy consisted of four learning-orientated stages: Resources, Toolkits, Experiences and Application. Keeping in mind that the audience included anyone from the region, from other forms of farming/land use, through to home or lifestyle gardeners, or school teachers and students – all can be considered caretakers of the landscape.
