Anatomy Lessons
WHO THEY ARE & WHAT IS ANATOMY LESSONS
Michelle Beevors
Anatomy Lessons, a project 17 years in the making, evolved from early sketches to meticulous study, including measuring bones in museum basements. The series has captivated audiences across New Zealand with its striking balance of care and destruction, inviting reflection on the fragility of life and the human impact on the natural world. At the heart of the project is Dunedin-based sculptor and educator Michele Beevors, whose work explores the intersections of art, nature, and memory. Beevors is best known for her life-sized knitted animal skeletons, which confront extinction and challenge viewers to consider our relationship with the environment. As Head of Sculpture at the Dunedin School of Art, she continues to exhibit widely, both in New Zealand and internationally, combining her studio practice with mentorship and education. Her work has been presented in museums, galleries, and exhibitions across the globe, earning critical acclaim for its originality, craftsmanship, and conceptual depth.
WHAT WE DID
We collaborated with Michele Beevors to design and produce a presentation publication for Anatomy Lessons, aimed at introducing the project to potential museums and curators. Our approach combined strong visual storytelling with concise, accessible written content, ensuring that the publication clearly conveyed the exhibition’s themes of care, destruction, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. We focused on creating a format that highlighted Michele’s practice while remaining highly readable and visually engaging, making it suitable for institutional review. Every element - from layout to typography, imagery to narrative flow- was carefully considered to support the project’s impact and resonate with curators and museum professionals. The final publication serves as both a presentation tool and a reflection of the meticulous, thoughtful nature of Michele’s long-term project, helping to extend the reach of Anatomy Lessons to new audiences and opportunities.
